We’ve Got Asparagus!

Asparagus Crowns from Territorial Seed Co.

Millennium Asparagus Crowns (text from Territorial Seed Company‘s site)
Out-yielding some of the most ambitious asparagus, Millennium is quickly becoming a garden and cuisine favorite with an outstanding flavor. These hardy, predominately male plants produce succulent, high-quality spears for years. The plants are rust-resistant and perform well in medium to heavy soils.

Our Greenhouse is (mostly) FINISHED!!!

Our greenhouse is done!! Of course we still need to finish a couple tiny things, like getting the tools cleared out, preparing the soil, and getting the shelves built. It’s finished enough for now. I absolutely love it.

We built our greenhouse out of unfinished cedar, antique windows and our old front door. It’s really just an expensive tomato cover and place to story my ‘sensitive’ plants over winter.

2010 Potager. Greenhouse was built where you see the green bean trellis.

Our new greenhouse! We simply moved the raised bed to a new spot in the garden.

We’ve Got Tomatoes Up The Wazoo

Since we had such poor tomato germination last year (I suspect using the heat pad inside the house had something to do with it), I sowed multiples in each pot this year. To my surprise, they all germinated. Then I had a hard time thinning the extras and figured my friends would take a couple.

In all, we have over 70 tomato seedlings. Today they graduated into their own pots with potting soil – a lot of work. That’s a big move from their cramped quarters in the sterile coconut mulch I sowed them in.

A little ridiculous.

Let’s hope the extras find homes soon since now they’re going to GROW!

And the Winner of the $25 Peaceful Valley Gift Card is…

Before I spill the beans on who the winner is, I’d first like to thank Susan Morrison and Rebecca Sweet for throwing such a fun cyber book party. Their new book, Garden Up!, was released last week and is available on Amazon.com. If you have any interest in gardening, vertical gardening, living walls, espalier, vines, garden art and beautiful garden pictures, you’ll want to check out this book.

To help celebrate the release of their book, seven giveaways were announced last week with the drawings taking place today. So, without further adieu I’m happy to announce the of the winner of the $25 Peaceful Valley gift card is comment #58!

Congratulations to Victoria Tory for winning the $25 Peaceful Valley gift card! The good news is that Peaceful Valley has a three way cherry tree – you’ll just have to espalier the tree yourself! Someone will be in touch with you shortly to get your mailing address to send you your gift card. Happy shopping!

If you want to check out today’s other winners, here are the direct links:

I hope you enjoy Garden Up! as much as I do! Congratulations to all the giveaway winners and to Susan and Rebecca on their new book!

In a Pinch, Do You Use Paper or Plastic?

We were in the grocery store last night and only brought one fabric grocery bag. It was supposed to be a quick stop. Anyway, we ended up needing an additional bag and couldn’t agree on paper or plastic. They both have their faults.

Since we couldn’t agree, I thought I send out a poll to see what you all think.

Let me know in your comments why you answered the way you did. I’m interested in your opinion.

Update: I found this interesting diagram in the Washington Post that explains the environmental impacts of both. Click here to read it.
