I’m Loving Renee’s Garden Babies Butterhead Lettuce!

With a name like Garden Babies Butterhead Lettuce, how could I not love it! Not only do I love the way it looks, but it’s tasty too. It adds a nice contrast to the mesclun lettuce we typically grow. And we love our fresh salads in the summer. We’re growing these beauties in pots on our patio.
Just this week we started harvesting our first batch we sowed on May 8. Half the lettuce in the picture below is now gone (good thing I took the pictures when I did). Later today I’ll sow some more in a different spot. Since we’re growing so many other kinds of lettuce we’re not necessarily following the every two week rule with these seeds – we are re-sowing something green every two weeks.
Here are some of the other greens we’re growing in the potager:
- Wine Country Mesclun Mix
- Wild Garden Lettuce Mix
- Valentine Mesclun Mix
- Arugula
- Spinach
Next to the chicken coop, I’m growing Renee’s Italian Cameo Large-Leaf Container Basil but had to re-sow the pot because the chickens dug up all the seeds. Since these guys have only been in the ground since the first week of June, they’re still pretty small. It doesn’t help that our summer hasn’t arrived yet in Washington state and these little guys need a little more heat to get growing. I’m sure I’ll love this basil as soon as my pot is filled and I’m able to make caprese salad w/ our fresh tomatoes – at this rate I’m thinking August.
We’re also growing Summer Splash Marigolds from Renee’s Garden Seeds. I almost hate to admit this but I think I buried all the seedlings with mulch when I was getting ready for the garden tour. I don’t typically sow seeds in the flower garden directly (except in the fall when doing my clean-up). Plus, it doesn’t help that I used up all the seeds in the packet (I typically over sow and thin later). I may have to get more Marigold seeds so I have something to report back. They’ll look really nice in my “yellow” garden I’ve got started next to the pond.
I’m growing with the SeedGROW project. Thanks to Renee’s Garden for providing us with free seeds! There are 12 or so of us bloggers from across the US that received the same three packets of seeds from Renee’s Garden Seeds: Italian Cameo Large-Leaf Container Basil, Summer Splash Marigold and Garden Babies Butterhead Lettuce. We’ll post our seed sowing/growing progress on the 2nd of every month with all posts linked on http://grow.gardenbloggers.com/.
You weer smart to plant the lettuce in a smaller container; mine’s too spread out. Lol, I’m too used to “regular” lettuce, I guess!

Wow – that lettuce does look beautiful! I love the re-purposed wooden box planter as well. I’ll definitely be putting Garden Babies on my list for next year – yum!

I’m horribly late for commenting on July’s SeedGROW posts, but since tomorrow is the 2nd, I’d figured it would be a good reminder that Augusts posts are coming up. Can’t wait for the latest installment of your SeedGROW saga. Love the lettuce in the wooden box. It seems that wooden boxes were invented to make lettuce growing in them real cool.
