Inspiration Needed for Front Pathway

We were chatting about how we were going to remove my front pathway and before I knew it my pathway was being broken up into tiny pieces. It was way easier to remove than we thought. Unfortunately, I haven’t decided what I’m going to put there INSTEAD!

I have my two inspiration pictures (at bottom) that both have large pieces of stone leading through a garden. I guess I figure when I get to the stone yard I’ll pick a stone that speaks to me.

I appreciate any ideas, tips or encouragement you can provide.

Here’s the space we need to add a new pathway:

Pathway leading from the street to the front door. Check out all the river rock they used as a base!

Here are my inspiration pictures:

Red-ish Stone

Black Stone

I don’t have sourced for these pictures because I clipped them both from magazines awhile ago. Let me know if you know the source.

I like the big stones. If you can make it work go with it. Just remember Travis isn’t always right.

    • The place we’re thinking of going to is right outside Monroe – heading towards Duvall – called All Seasons Stone and Landscape Supply. Here’s their flagstone collection: http://www.allseasonsprod.com/Product_Gallery/Pages/Flagstone.html
Personally I like the stone to the far right but Travis likes the one in the middle. I think his color looks ‘blah’ and he thinks mine looks 80’s. I also think I like the round better than the sharp edged ones.

  2. That’s great that he went for it right away! I really like the first picture and I do like the big stones too.

  3. I’m a really visual person so I would use cardboard cutouts of different shapes or sizes and see what it looks like in place. Sometimes that helps with perspective. I think large stones may make your yard look smaller but smaller stones may make the pathway look longer and therefore the yard bigger. Just a thought!

    • That’s a great idea! I’ll only do it if I can use it convince Travis to do it my way! j/k I do think the stones pictured may be a bit big for my pathway but I want it so one stone fills the width of the pathway. We’ll see.

  5. I have to say that I like the big stones better. I think that they are more visually appealing, and a bit more modern. The samller stones are more “cottagey”, so it depends on the modd you want. Creeping thyme or moss is a nice filler between the stones and can be walked on.
