Secret Garden Remodel

Front Yard Today

How the Front Yard Looks Today

After “discussing” it all morning, I think we finally agree how we’re going to improve the front yard. To start we’re going to turn the grass patch on the right into an oval — giving me a larger shade garden space under the magnolia (tulip tree).  Then, we’re going to remove the small hedge and cement pathway leading to the front door.  Instead of the rigid cement pathway I’d like to replace it with large circular stones that I haven’t found yet – but will.  I also plan to move around a lot of the plants in the garden on the left.

So the rest of the house matches the new front door, we’re going to add a little brown accent to the inside of our window frames. I hear on these older houses you should really have three colors: your main house color, trim and accent color.  We haven’t added our accent color yet .

Now, to figure out where I’m going to plant all those Japanese Holly I’ll be digging up along the front path…

I’ll keep you posted on our progress. We plan to remodel the back yard next to add a patio and more garden space.

  1. I use Japanese holly and boxwoods to outline my vegetable beds. Your shrubs are pretty big, so I would trim them well, to save space. Good luck with your remodeling!

    • I love your idea to outline the veggie garden! Our veggies are in raised beds and will be close to our new patio area so it won’t work for us.

I’ll probably still put them in the back yard but have them outline the new flower garden area we’re planning.

  2. Well now I don’t know what to say. I thought it looked pretty nice! LOL
I am looking forward to seeing what you do. Have you looked at All Seasons stone & landscape? They have some pretty nice stone at what I think are good prices. I don’t know if they have round pavers but it sure is fun to look. We bought our decorative pond stones from there.

    • Travis just went to All Season Stone and Landscape and was really impressed with their stones. We’ll have to check them out for the pathway stones. Thanks!

    • Katie, thanks! It’s just all part of the greater plan. I’ve hated the front walkway from the second I saw it – it needs to go.

    • Thank you – you’re too kind. Trust me, if it was just me, there wouldn’t be any grass!

I think a deep purple would be a great accent color. The door is great!

    • Leslie, purple is my LEAST favorite color. Can we go for a rusty red/brown color instead?
